In March of 2001 I traveled to the Albany Civic Center in Albany, GA to watch two of the top high school players in the country square off in the 2nd round of the GHSA State Championships. The match-up between Brown and Powell had it's moments as they took turns showing each other what they could do. Down the stretch Powell found himself on the bench watching having fouled out of the game and that was the deciding factor as Brown and the Terrors held on for a 70-68 win. ![]() Brown fronts Powell and gets help from an unidenified teammate. The following week in the state semifinals in Macon, Brown would drop 38 points against Berkmar but it wasn't enough as Glynn Academy lost by the score of 81-78. Clark Williams would scored 26 points and future Mr. Georgia Basketball Wayne Arnold added 18 for the eventual state champions from Berkmar. Later that year Brown would go on to be the first high school kid to be the No.1 pick in the NBA Draft. Brown was drafted by the Washington Wizards and their then new GM Michael Jordan. Since then Brown has played for the Los Angels Lakers, Memphis Grizzlies and is currently on the roster of the Detroit Pistons. ![]() Powell points to Brown and tells a teammate to pick him up. Powel would take his game to NC State where as a freshman he made the ACC All-Freshman Team. Powell elected to enter the NBA Draft after his sophomore year but went undrafted. After some time playining in Eurpoe he was signed by the Dalls Mavericks; he would later make stops with the Indiana Pacers, the Golden State Warriors and the LA Clippers before siginging on with the La Lakers in 2008. Although he dosn't get any spin with the Lakers, Powell he has become an intragual part of the team according to Head Caoch Phil Jackson as a high enery practice player and you want to know how valuable that is, Powell now owns two World Championship rings how many players can say that. |
