FavorsThompkinsFormer  Wesleyan and 4SHOT Hoops All-State performer Trey Thompkins scored 20 points to lead four players in double-figures as the Bulldogs from Georgia held on for a very satisfying win over their rivals from Georgia Tech.

Athens, GA - The game was nip and tuck all the way and although the action was as crisp as both coaches might like the energy and intensity was there.

Former Parkview H.S. star Ricky McPhee got off to a great start for UGA drilling a pair of three-pointers to give the Bulldogs the early lead. Another former area high school All-American, Gani Lawal would make his presence felt for Georgia Tech scoring a pair of baskets inside to pull the Yellow Jackets to within one.

The Bulldogs would open up their largest lead of the half when former Columbia H.S. star Travis Leslie scored back-to-back baskets to make the score 16-8.

Georgia Tech’s highly touted 6-9 freshman Derrick Favors (South Atlanta H.S.) got into some early foul trouble but he showed the skills that are going to make him a lot of money real soon.

Lawal and Favors continued to work hard on the glass for the Yellow Jackets as they cut the lead to 17-14 with 8:31 left in the half.

Guards Dustin Ware  (UGA - North Cobb Christian) and Mfon Udofia (GA Tech - Miller Grove H.S.) played heads ball in directing their teams from the point.

Two baskets by the Yellow Jackets Zachery Peacock late in the half would give his team their first lead of the game 26-25. Georgia would however regain the lead scoring the last five points of the half to take a 31-26 lead into the locker room.

Georgia Tech came out in the second half and seized the momentum and the lead; Lawal scored twice and Favors hit a pair of free-throws and threw down a dunk to give the Yellow Jackets a 36-33 lead.

The teams would continue to trade baskets back and forth most of the second half. Georgia would regain the momentum and with less than 1:00 minute to play they led by six, 63-57.

The Yellow Jackets tried to put the sting on with a full court press but Ware would do a nice job of protecting the ball and hitting his free-throws going 6 for 6 as the Bulldogs knocked off 20th ranked Georgia Tech.

The Final Score: Georgia 73 - GA Tech 66
